With the General Conference on The Dark Side of the Law (La face cachee du droit) to be organized online on June 9-11, Juris Diversitas reopened the call for papers.

Panel proposals and interdisciplinary presentations are strongly encouraged, as is the participation of doctoral students and scholars from outside of the discipline of law. While parallel sessions featuring three presentations of twenty-minute each will be the pattern, more creative arrangements are encouraged.

Proposals should be in English or in French. Proposals of circa 250 words (or 1000 words for panel proposals with three or more speakers) should be submitted to Professor Salvatore Mancuso at: smancuso63@yahoo.it by February 28, 2021 (tell us if you need more time), with a short biography paragraph listing major or relevant publications. Make this a single Word document with minimal formatting, so that proposal and biography can be copied easily into the conference program.

Juris Diversitas General Meeting, February 27, 2021

 

Dear Juris Diversitas Members,

This is to confirm that the General Meeting of our Association is scheduled for this coming Saturday, February 27, 2021, at 17:00 Central European Time (UTC/GMT +1), also known as JDT (Juris Diversitas Time) or Swiss time, since Juris Diversitas is registered as a Swiss association and has its seat in Lausanne.

No election will be conducted during the meeting, as the offices of President, Vice Presidents (two offices), General Secretary, and Treasurer are not contested. The current officers nominated themselves for a new term (Constitution, art. 9: “Where only a single nomination is received, the person nominated is deemed elected”). The Election Officer will also announce the nomination of two additional members for Communication. One may be appointed to the Executive Committee (Constitution, art. 8: “The President and Vice-Presidents may also collectively appoint up to two other members to the Executive Committee for specific duties”).

opens an international Call for Papers for Younger Comparatists on

Global Sustainability & Comparative Legal Cultures

BACKGROUND

Environmental-friendly production, practices and actions to support long-term economic

growth, sustainable consumption, new food patterns, and new policies to save natural resource

and limit pollution, are receiving renewed attention both globally and on a local scale. How do

legal systems consider the Nature’s resilience? How various cultural elements affect sustainability?

How new forms of governance re-shape cultural policies in the Western tradition and elsewhere?

Acknowledging the crucial role of a cross-cultural, comparative approach to global sustainability,

is it possible to promote legal change for a better future, and if so, in which ways?

The 2021 SIRD Call for Papers for Younger Comparatists explores the interaction of

humankind with Earth’s environmental dynamics, to comparatively examine the many pathways

through which legal cultures support and promote Nature’s resilience.

DATE AND VENUE

April 22, 2022, at the Department of International, Legal, Historical and Political Studies

of the University of Milano “La Statale”.

The event is to take place in person, but if the Covid-19 crisis shall still impose

restrictions remote participation will be allowed.

TO WHOM THE CALL FOR PAPERS IS ADDRESSED

This call is addressed to PhD candidates and holders, lecturers, adjunct professors, based

at Italian or foreign Universities.

HOW TO SUBMIT YOUR PROPOSAL

Proposal are received by email (sird2022youngercomparatists@gmail.com ) before April

15, 2021. Please send in an abstract of apx 300 words in Word format (Times New Roman 12),

Jean Monnet Chair - ENFASIS

with essential information about the applicant (Author’s contacts, University affiliation, proposal title).

Selected proposals will receive a notification of acceptance within July 31, 2021.

The deadline for the presentation of a draft paper of no more than 10.000 words with footnotes is February, 1, 2022.

Papers are presented at the event in Italian or English, and must be written in one of these languages.

FEE AND GENERAL ASPECTS

Scientific Council, composed of 5 professors, will select 20 proposals for presentation at the event according to the double-blind peer review.

There is no participation fee for this call.

AWARDS

The three best papers will receive the award of SIRD Younger Comparatists 2022 (400 euro). The award will be announced to the public at the opening of the event.

PROCEEDINGS

After the event, selected papers may be considered for publication by SIRD.

General Conference on the Dark Side of the Law: no need to resubmit if your proposal had already been accepted

 Dear Juris Diversitas Members and Friends,

Some of you are asking whether you need to resubmit your proposal for the Dark Side of the Law conference. There is no need to do so, unless you decide to make a substantial change to your initial proposal. We recommend you verify that your proposal has been accepted and if so you will automatically included in the program. We will in due course ask you to reconfirm your participation. 

This will be a great conference with multiple panels and a great diversity of topics. There is still room and if you have not yet submitted and are tempted, it is still time to participate: don't wait too long, if you cannot meet the February 28 deadline, let us know and we will give you extra time. Because of postponing our General Conference and General Meeting due to the coronavirus pandemic, the election of Juris Diversitas officers (Executive Committee Members) is now overdue. We kindly invite you to nominate candidates for all positions available for election. Self-nomination is acceptable, noting that nominees may only run for one office in each election. Note that all present holders of renewable positions have indicated that they are available to be reelected in the position they presently occupy. They are with this nominated for this position by the effect of this message, but they will have to be elected by the members in any case. I do not write this to dissuade nominations, but I know that some of you will ask, or that we might not receive any nominations for a specific position. Our Colleague Prof. Alessandra Pera has kindly accepted to act as Election Officer, in compliance with article 9 of the Juris Diversitas Constitution. The only condition to make a nomination is to have your dues paid for 2021 or commit to pay them, preferably by the election date. Your nominations will be accepted if you certify in your message that you will do due diligence to pay the 2021 dues, if possible before the date of the General Meeting. 

The General Assembly shall be held on Saturday February 27, at 5:00 pm Swiss (Lausanne) time. A Zoom link will be posted in due course.

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the Juris Diversitas conference on The Dark Side of the Law will be held online, on June 9-11, 2021.

Jacques Vanderlinden (1932-2021)

 

It is with great sadness that we learn that Jacques Vanderlinden passed away on January 22, 2021 in Brussels. He was a Member of the Advisory Council of Juris Diversitas. Officers and members of Juris Diversitas express their deep sympathy to his wife Jenny, their two sons Jacques Jr. and Jean-Paul, and their children.

Professor Emeritus Jacques Vanderlinden received his PhD degree in law from Brussels Free University (Belgium) in 1956, then his Agrégation de l’Enseignement supérieur in 1967 when he published his world acclaimed Le concept de code en Europe occidentale du XIII^e au XIX^e siècle, after the publication by the Royal Academy for Overseas Sciences of Belgium of his Essai sur les juridictions de droit coutumier dans les territoires d'Afrique centrale in 1959.  He started his teaching career at the Free University of Brussels in 1958, where he also served as Dean of the Faculty of Law, and concluded it in 1992. He then started teaching law at the University of Moncton (New-Brunswick, Canada), where he has held honorary positions such as Academic Advisor of the Centre international de la common law en français. He is currently Professor Emeritus of both universities. He is a full elected fellow of the Royal Academy for Overseas Sciences, of the International Academy of Comparative Law and a Foreign Fellow of the National Academy of Italy (Accademia nazionale dei Lincei).

He has published some 200 articles and some 30 books and monographs, especially in the fields of African laws, comparative law, legal history, and legal theory, more specifically and recently legal pluralism. Moréteau and Agustín Parise, he wrote the final chapter (1900-Present) of Western Legal Traditions (Seán Patrick Donlan, Remco Van Rhee & Aniceto Masferrer eds., Ius Commune Series, Hart, forthcoming).

He has been a visiting professor at the Universities of Abidjan, Addis Ababa, Bordeaux, Boston, Edinburgh, Kigali, London, Louisiana State University, Paris, South Carolina and has given lectures at many other Universities.
